Spring Peepers are the earliest frog in the spring to call in this area. They call from the puddles caused by the spring melt waters. Their calls are as much a sign of the end of winter as the return of migratory birds. They are very loud when they call. So loud that their very high voice hurts the ears and it is difficult to focus on the position of any one frog. Spring peepers are very small, about an inch long. I have never seen one. I have stood right by the pond where they are calling and suddenly shine a flashlight into the shallow water only to see nothing. No movement - just dead leaves on the pond bottom. Yep, these guys have good camouflage! Spring peepers will also lift themselves up out of the water on twigs, perhaps to make their call carry further. Most people from the city don't know what they are, thinking they are a kind of insect like a cricket. They start calling here in late April, and they will continue calling into June. In May other species start to join in. They usually sing after dusk, and stop when the temperature gets down to about 10 C (50 F). They may start up for a short chorus during the day, if it is cloudy and rainy. This particular song is constructed out of a number of recordings to give the experience of peepers in early spring. I did the foreground and mid-ground recordings in 2003 using a spaced microphone pair. I filled in the background with two recordings I made in 2005 using binaural baffled microphones. You might hear the long protracted trill of a toad in the background as well. Digitally recorded, mixed and edited field recordings
