Daybreak on the Kennisis River © MP3
The Kennisis (pronounced Keh-KNEES-is) River in August at daybreak. The sun isn't even up yet, and about 20 feet from shore, from a little island which is just big enough for a few saplings and the microphones, the tape is rolling. Mist is flowing and swirling in the cool morning air above the warm bubbling water. This is an 50 ft (15 m) wide arm of the Kennisis River after it splits to go around a larger island. Surround-sound is being recorded as water flows 360 degrees around the binaural omni-directional microphone pair. This is a spot especially chosen for the particularly musical qualities of the river here. The river bed is relatively flat which allows the river to relax and sing it's way around or over rocks. I found that this exuberant sound is special to this particular spot, because when I tried a few other locations that were easier to get to, all failed to match the essence that I captured here. What you hear is the interaction between water and the streambed, untouched by human development, which has formed from thousands of years of water erosion. It is the interplay of rock and water, islands and streams, gravity and moving masses. Listen long enough, and you begin to hear the gentle side of the always-awake river spirit. Daybreak on the Kennisis River © features a long 10 second fade-in/out at the beginning and the end, so there are no sudden disturbing changes in sound volume when played looped. Daybreak on the Kennisis River © is a natural soundscape composed of edited and mixed digital stereo quasi-binaural field recordings. This recording technique produces a 3 dimensional audio image when listening with headphones. Encoded at a bitrate of 192 kps for quality listening.
